TsegBall Comes To West Virginia's Shepherd University
On April 3, 2005, the Shepherd University Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Sports introduced TsegBall during a workshop for Physical Education majors in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. About twenty students attended the workshop organized by Dr. J. Michael Jacobs, Professor of Physical Education. His colleague, Dr. Anna De Vito, Associate Professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies was also present.
Once TsegBall Specialist David Perez explained the rules, it took the group less than five minutes to pick up the game. They played nonstop for an hour and it was clear that they all enjoyed themselves.
"I'm really glad they came today," said Dr. De Vito. "Some of our students said that they weren't sure about it when they first came in, you know, 'What's this TsegBall thing?' But once they got playing it, they were like, 'Wow, this is a great game!' We really like it."
18-year-old Bryan Beverage, a Physical Education major, agrees: "I really love this game! It teaches you a lot of self discipline, and forces you to develop a strategy and work with your team."
A number of the future Physical Education instructors felt that one day they would love to utilize this game in their classrooms. One P.E. major, who also works for the Boys and Girls Clubs felt that this would be a great game to use with her group: "I would purchase this for our club...[it's got a] high fitness component, [you] get everybody moving, both girls and guys. Generally I see girls are afraid of contact, so no contact [here], you don't have to worry about that. [It's got a] soft ball, so you don't have to worry about that."
Dr. De Vito also felt that TsegBall's unique format encourages players to think about sports in a different way: "I like that you can throw it over your head and backwards, and that was so hard for people to imagine, because most of the games you throw things forward.... students aren't used to thinking in that way, so its kind of that you have to re-train the way you think about sport in order to play TsegBall at your best."
Overall, TsegBall was a big hit with the students and staff at Shepherd University. Interested in bringing TsegBall to your school? For more information, contact TsegBall at 1-877-692-8666.
